Welcome to episode #1 of The Connections Matter Academy!
What is The Connections Matter Academy?
- An educational animated series to help teens and young adults understand trauma
- Co-created by me, 30 foster care alumni, and COKid’s trauma experts
- A FREE and entertaining resource to build skills for children impacted by trauma
Why did we create it?
“Child trauma occurs more than you think. More than two-thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event by age 16.” – U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
The Connections Matter Academy is a set of engaging videos designed to educate young people about trauma and how it impacts their life. We created it to inspire teens to begin their healing process, break the cycle of intergenerational trauma, and reach their highest potential through healthy connections with others.
We know our videos are not a magic pill. Still, we believe that imparting this information to teens and young adults can alleviate the impact of their early trauma and improve long-term outcomes for survivors. Children with unprocessed trauma frequently turn to substance abuse to cope with their distress. We hope to interrupt this process with knowledge and skills for recovering from trauma.
The academy provides steps we can take on our healing journey even if we never completely heal from what we’ve been through.
The Academy is appropriate for ages 14+; however, the Connections Matter Academy is also useful for educating adults about childhood trauma.
